I read a lot on some of my favorite blogs about night diapering. I know it is a big problem for some people. We started out rough, too, but in the end, night diapering has been relatively easy for us. We have pretty much always used her Wonder Wraps with a prefold inside. At first, I think we weren't putting enough stuffing in, because she would leak out the top of her diaper cover. The prefolds we were using were the wrong kind, so we go that fixed. (Don't use the birdseye ones they sell in stores--they're full of fluff that doesn't absorb anything) Now we're using "real" diapers. I found some microfiber bar mop towels on clearance at Target and bought several packages. I just cut them up and made my own microfiber inserts. I use these in every diaper for extra protection all day. They work great. They also don't seem to smell to badly, either. At night, I stick one of those inside the prefold, and then put a Kissaluvs supersoaker on top. This combo seems to work like a charm for Karina, because once I added the two inserts, we haven't had a leak since. She fills the diaper up, because she sleeps almost 12 hours a night (I know, I'm sooooo lucky!!!!) but she doesn't leak. Fortunately, we didn't have the ordeal that some people have had. My advice: if one thing isn't working, try something else. Don't be afraid to pinch pennies and make something yourself, either. I love my inserts! They weren't hard, either.
All I did to make the inserts was eyeball how wide I wanted them and cut them out of the bar towels I had bought. Then, I folded them in half length-wise, and sewed up two sides. I left the other edge open to turn them right side out, and because it was a towel, it was already serged on that edge, so I was done! Super easy. Mine are white, but I have seen a lot of microfiber towels around in colors, too.
The Kissaluvs super soakers are great too. I love how soft the one side is. I read on a blog somewhere (I'm sorry to say I can't remember which one) that you shouldn't put the microfiber right next to the baby's skin. I think it's because of irritation, but even when I was doing that, she didn't seem to have a problem.
